Auckland had a problem with storm and run off
water, this was stored in large tanks set under the beaches so they
could be flushed into the sea at low tide. The tanks became redundant
in the 1960's and were purchased by Kelly Tarlton.
Kelly refurbished these tanks, flooded them with
salt water and turned them into a sea life conservation centre.
One tank was set to Antarctic temperatures and holds penguins, another
tank has sharks and large rays in it, the final tank holds smaller
fish. Being right on the coast these tanks can be flushed with clean
salt water every tide to provide a healthy environment for the fish.
The centre has been opened for public viewing
and is used as an education centre for schools. We visited and took
the photos on this page, they are a bit poo as my automatic camera
focuses on the glass not the fish on the other side of it. If you
want to see better photos look at their website. The link is on
the right.
